Description
The Georgetown University Center for Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) offers an Executive Certificate in Financial Planning in collaboration with its partner, Kaplan Financial™. This distinct program, taught by premier faculty and presented in the Georgetown University tradition of excellence, requires nine months of rigorous part-time study. Georgetown University is registered with the Certified Financial Planning Board of Standards Inc. to fulfill the education requirements of the CFP® certification.*
The program is designed for both established financial professionals and working professionals entering the field of financial planning. Increasingly, individuals, families, and small business owners are turning to financial planners as a means to financial security. As the field of financial planning evolves and financial professionals come to play integral roles in the lives of clients, the Executive Certificate in Financial Planning can provide a means to distinguish oneself in the industry and in the eyes of clients.
The field of financial planning is experiencing healthy growth. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook (2006-2007), employment opportunities for financial planners are projected to increase "faster-than-average" (18 to 26 percent) through 2014. Growth is expected to remain strong as baby boomers retire, financial products develop in complexity, tax laws change, and the industry moves toward regulation.
Structure
The program comprises six courses that focus on both the theory and practice of personal financial planning. The program covers core competencies in insurance, investing, taxation, retirement planning, and estate planning in addition to ethical and professional issues faced by financial planners. See below for a list of courses.
The Executive Certificate in Financial Planning is a cohort program. If admitted, students are required to complete all courses in sequence to earn a certificate. Classes meet every other weekend at the Clarendon Campus. Classes do not meet over holiday weekends.
For a more detailed overview of the program, please review the Information Session presentation from December 12, 2007.
