Description:
This program is designed to help professionals develop expertise and skills to enable them to pursue careers in the journalism industry. Students will learn how to research, report, and write various types of articles that are published in newspapers and magazines including news stories, feature stories, longer investigative stories, book reviews, and science/medical stories. Students will also learn the basics of broadcast writing, as well as writing for the World Wide Web. In addition to learning the fundamentals of various specific genres and mediums within the world of journalistic writing and reporting, the certificate includes courses that explore the business side of the industry and examine the ethical dilemmas that journalists face in their everyday work lives.

- Journalists new to the profession who feel they need a boot camp
atmosphere to help them get up to speed
- Recent graduates who have an affinity for writing and who want to
explore the journalism profession
- Professionals who want to explore a possible career change and are
intrigued by the Washington journalism scene
- Professionals whose job duties include an element of journalistic
writing and/or reporting
Format:
This program includes 56 hours of instruction with lectures, in-class group projects, and writing exercises. This certificate is an open enrollment program; courses can be taken on an individual basis. Students will earn the certificate in Journalism after completing a minimum of seven courses.
