Advanced Screenwriting

Related Program Areas: Communications and Writing

Course Description:

Advanced Screenwriting is a continuation of Introduction to Screenwriting. This course focuses on the development of the art and craft of screenwriting. In this seminar, students cover specific issues of writing in screenplay format, character development, act development, scene development and tightening the screenplay's story vision. Similar to the Introduction to Screenwriting, the class begins with a series of lectures, film screenings and writing assignments, and then shifts to a writing workshop atmosphere that focuses on the student's development of screenplays.

Each student is expected to complete a significant part of a new screenplay's First Act, a continuation of the Second Act and/or Third Act of a developing screenplay or complete a major rewrite of an existing screenplay. The emphasis will be on writing. The classes start with film script analysis, video screenings and lectures in order to understand the elements of screenwriting. This period will introduce exercises in story concept, characterization, plot structure and individual scenes. After this introductory segment, the class will focus on the student's work in a workshop atmosphere. Again, this is an intensive seminar in feature film screenwriting, (referred by some as Screenwriting Boot Camp) and the sessions will be rigorous and challenging.
