Introduction to Screenwriting

Related Program Areas: Communications and Writing

Course Description:

Screenwriting is part creation, part craft. Like any other craft, it improves with practice. This class provides the beginner with the opportunity to learn and develop that craft by writing proposals, treatments, and scripts for original short films. We begin with the basics of visual storytelling, and then concentrate on the two fundamental elements of drama — structure and character. We also examine standard formatting practices dialogue, and whatever career-related questions students may have. There will be some lecture time, and some discussion of current TV shows and movies, but the class is primarily built on in-class reading and critique of student's work. Previous writing experience is not necessary.
