Vincent Kiernan, PhD

Vincent Kiernan has been a journalist for more than 20 years. Most recently, he worked for nine years as a senior editor and senior writer for The Chronicle of Higher Education, a weekly trade newspaper in Washington, D.C. As a senior writer, he followed advanced-technology projects such as supercomputing. As a senior editor, he directed the paper's coverage of information technology and distance education.

Earlier in his career, he worked for New Scientist, the British popular science weekly; Space News, a trade newspaper for the space industry; and newspapers in California and New York. He also spent a year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Knight Science Journalism Fellow. He has freelanced extensively and has written three books, including Embargoed Science (2006, University of Illinois Press), a critical look at media reporting of science and medicine. In 2002, he earned a doctorate in mass communication from the University of Maryland.
