Classic and Romantic: Styles and Values in Western Culture

Course Description:

The tension between the Classic style and the Romantic style, one of the most enduring and constructive in Western thought, controls the focus of this course. Cutting across discipline and period distinctions, students interpret selected works of music, visual arts, and literature in terms of conflict between reason and emotion, law and liberty, community and self. Undergraduates who have completed less than 51 credits must have the permission of the assistant dean for BALS to register.
