Elle Spinks - Reaction to Capitol tour
When I arrived at the bus stop for the tour, I was not exactly sure what to expect. With all honesty I did not know that a House press gallery even existed. Within a few hours I became very familiar with the nuts and bolts of the two press galleries and in addition I learned many interesting tidbits about the architecture and history of the Capitol. The bustle and excitement of the two galleries was absolutely compelling. I thoroughly enjoyed the talk by the gallery superintendent and was excited to learn of the functions, purpose, and history of the House press gallery.
I also concluded a few things about the life of a Congressman after our tour. I realized how incredibly difficult it would be to sit through the monotony of a session on so many days of the year, although I am envious of the how the Senators and Representatives spend the bulk of their time in such a history rich culture. When we were viewing the floors of the Senate and of the House, I couldn't help but think about how that room had overtime held the most brilliant minds our country has ever seen. I was constantly thinking about how the stairs I walked up were the same steps that every president in our history had climbed up before addressing all of the world. These thoughts are the very reason as to why I wanted to attend this program, to be in such a historic area is an incredible opportunity.
