According to Sir Francis Bacon, reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man. Writing is indeed regarded as a high priority within Georgetown’s Liberal Studies Degree Program.
In addition, the Liberal Studies Degree Program exhibits the importance of writing by providing evening hours Writing Services (free of charge) to its students.
Students can gain help from the Writing Center coordinator and an English graduate student who serve at the center at any stage of the writing process, whether it be to improve grammar and style,
to brainstorm and flesh out ideas, to work on organization of a paper, and to turn first drafts into publishable projects. Most students utilize Liberal Studies Writing Services
with their course papers in mind; others have used the Center to work on “outside” writing projects
that they hope to publish.
In addition to offering evening writing help, the Liberal Studies Degree Program
also offers a Writing Boot Camp, a one-day intensive workshop, designed to introduce students to academic writing
across the disciplines. The workshop leads students through the entire writing and research process. The
Liberal Studies Degree Program has published its third edition (book form) of Writing Across the Curriculum,
a collection of student papers nominated by faculty members. Published twice a year is
The Liberal Studies Magazine containing articles by and about students,
faculty, and alumni. Both the magazine and the Writing Across the Curriculum may be obtained by calling
202-687-5706 or 202-687-6070.

2. The Introductory Writing
Workshop
The Introductory Writing Workshop, designed for students who are
entering the Liberal Studies lower-division bachelor's program,
offers an intensive introduction to the conventions and expectations
of academic writing and to techniques and resources that will help
students work independently after the course is over. Students will
be introduced to brainstorming, drafting, and revision techniques
and will develop expertise in the Turabian citation system in a
collegial, supportive environment.
3. Services for Professors
Periodically, the Writing Services Coordinator contacts the Liberal
Studies Faculty regarding their needs and their students needs.
Additionally, Professor Temple visits
a number of classes each semester to introduce the tutoring program
and other writing services to students and to discuss writing problems
that Liberal Studies students frequently encounter. Please let Professor Temple know if you would like her to visit your class.
4. Student/Faculty Publishing Opportunity
The Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs has announced the following:
"We are very pleased to be launching Confluence: The Journal of Graduate
Liberal Studies, a substantively revised version of the AGLSP’s official
publication. We fully expect that the quality of the contents will match
the excellence of the design. From long experience, we know that the
strongest manuscripts come with the encouragement of program directors
and faculty of GLS programs. In order to maintain the high standards we
all want, we urge you to solicit your faculty, current students, and
alumni to submit materials to Confluence. We have attached a call for
submissions which we hope you will post and forward to members in your
program. With your help, we can reach our goal of producing one of the
preeminent journals in the field."
