Course Description:
Students will learn how to cover immigrant communities from the perspective of a foreign correspondent. They will be required to find a community in the Washington area in which they have no connection, immerse themselves in that community by finding a "fixer" and translator and then reporting about the issues of importance to that community. Reporting assignments will be supplemented with narrative journalism readings from the "front-lines" of immigrant communities. This course will be substantive, informative and require a dedication to getting the story and getting it right even in an environment in which the student has no previous reporting or language skills. It sounds like a challenge, and it will be, but the rewards will be immeasurable, allowing the students to take highly valued new skills back to their newsrooms.
