Academic Regulations and Policies

The SCS subscribes to the policies and procedures of The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in regard to academic dishonesty, sanctions, and disposition of records.

All applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit a TOEFL score of at least 550 (213 on the computer-based exam).

All applicants who indicate that they are non-U.S. citizens may pick up, request, or download from the Web an International Student Questionnaire that must be completed as directed on the form. Note: Georgetown University issue a certificate of eligibility (I-20) for participation as a non-degree graduate in this part-time program.

Net ID and Identification Card

Each student will be assigned a Net ID and given instructions on how to activate it and use Student Access+. Once registered, students should obtain an identification card (GOCARD) from the GOCARD office in Darnall Hall, Room 3, adjacent to the Student Health Center. It should be carried at all times; it will be required for admission to the library and other University facilities.

Georgetown University Transcripts

Transcripts of academic records may be obtained through the Office of the University Registrar, White-Gravenor Building, Room G-01, (202) 687-4020. Students pay a one-time transcript request fee of $12.00 the first semester they register.

GRADUATE COURSES

Criteria for Registration

Many but not all of the Departments make their graduate-level courses (courses numbered 350 or higher, only) available to non-degree graduate students. Before completing the application form and selecting your graduate course(s), contact the Department Chair to inquire if permission is granted for non-degree student enrollment. Some departments grant permission during mail-in registration; others ask students to wait until walk-in or late registration periods.

Those holding an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution are eligible to register as non-degree graduate students. All students for whom English is a foreign language must submit an official TOEFL score of 550 or higher (213 on computer-based exam) with their application. Non-U.S. citizens must complete the International Student Questionnaire as directed on the form, which can be downloaded here or picked up from the Office of International Programs, 2nd Floor Poulton Hall.

Please note that Georgetown University cannot issue a certificate of eligibility (I-20) for participation as a non-degree graduate in this part-time program.

Registration in these courses does not imply admission to The Graduate School. Those desiring to apply for graduate-degree status (with the exception of the Liberal Studies Degree Program) should apply directly to The Graduate School. The Graduate School will provide information concerning any possible transfer credit from these courses.

Application/Registration Procedures

To register, submit the following information:

  • A completed Registration Form
  • A final transcript with undergraduate degree posted. Transcripts from non-U.S. institutions may also need to be evaluated by a credential service, such as World Education Services.

  • A completed International Student Questionnaire (for non-U.S. citizens, only) turned in to the Office of International Programs, 2nd Floor Poulton Hall.
  • Permission Form printed on the bottom of the Registration Form which has been signed by the Department Chair (or designee) for the course(s) desired. Please note: Phone numbers for the Departments are listed in the Registrar's Schedule of Classes. Contact the Departments for office hours before you come to the University to have the Permission Form signed.

Payment

Receipt of a bill signifies that your application was complete, and you have been registered in your course(s). There will be no other notification. You should also verify your registration by checking your registration status online using Student Access+ as soon as you receive your Net ID.

If you do not receive a bill or a Net ID, contact Andrew Pingrey of the Registrar's Office (202-687-6393) for verification of your status. If your registration is confirmed yet you have not received a bill by August 20, 2008, call Student Accounts (202-687-7100).

Tuition payment may be made by VISA, American Express, or MasterCard, in addition to check and money order options. If you do not pay by the deadline stated on your bill or if your registration was received after Aug. 15th, you will need to come to a Walk-In Registration session on Aug. 25-26, 9:00 AM- 6:00 PM, SCS Office, Intercultural Center Room 225 to complete your registration and pay your bill at Student Accounts.

If you do not register or pay by August 26th, you will be assessed an $80.00 late fee. The bill confirms your registration and lists the building and room number for each of your courses. Unless you withdraw through the SCS office, you will be responsible for the billed tuition charges for your course(s). Call to withdraw: (202) 687-0355 or 687-5913.

Monday Class Schedule

To provide enough class hours, Monday courses will begin (1st class session) on Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 and will adhere to the published class times and room locations. Wednesday classes will begin on Sept. 3rd, 2008.

Course Changes and Withdrawals

With the approval of the SCS, courses may be dropped (with 100% tuition refund) or added or status changed to pass/fail or (where appropriate) audit from Aug. 27 to Sept. 5. After Sept. 5, no courses may be added or changed nor may changes of status to or from credit, pass-fail, or audit be accepted. A student may, however, withdraw from a course through Nov. 18th, 2008, by contacting the SCS office (202-687-0355 or 687-5913).

Should one withdraw officially, tuition credit will be given according to the refund schedule set by the Office of the Registrar. Call the Registrar=s Office, (202) 687-4020, to determine the rate of refund or check the Registrar's Website. For purposes of calculation, all classes adhere to the refund schedule, which reflects the weeks of the official semester (with the first day as Aug. 27th), regardless of when a particular class begins.

Incomplete

This grade is submitted when instructors have granted students extra time to complete required course work. For information on the graduate student Incomplete Policy, see the Graduate School Bulletin available in the Graduate School Office, 302 Intercultural Center.
