As part of Georgetown's Semester in Washington Program, students witness the inner-workings of international affairs in the city where nations converge and leaders shape history. Georgetown University offers the strengths, resources, and wide array of international affairs expertise that students and tomorrow's leaders seek for an unparalleled education in world affairs.

The program enables students to examine first hand the complex issues facing nations and political decision-makers today, along with the forces that drive policy in Washington. Guest speakers who are leaders in their fields teach students about security studies, foreign policy, peace and conflict resolution, human rights, economics, and international law. Small-group discussions provide a rigorous, stimulating environment for academic discourse.

Over the course of the spring semester, students analyze the issues and participate in a wide range of discussions with each other as well as Washington-based experts. Conversations with representatives from Congress, the State Department, the World Bank, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector add new and varied perspectives. Internships place students alongside global leaders and elected officials to learn how they work together on the world's most pressing issues. In the accompanying internship class, students mix theory with practice, reach beyond the work at their selected organizations, and reflect on the ethical and leadership implications of their internships and the role that their work can have on larger society.

Spring Semester Structure

• Academic seminar Mondays and Fridays, 6 credits
• Internship Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, plus accompanying internship class, 3 credits
• Research seminar, 3 credits

Students can also take an elective course on a space-available basis. In total, students can earn between 12 and 15 credits in the Semester in Washington Program. The spring program is for full-time students only.
