With its deep Jesuit roots and longstanding commitment to social justice, Georgetown University's credentials to teach advocacy and immersion journalism are unmatched. This genre starts with solid reporting but allows a distinct point of view to emerge, stretching and occasionally breaking the standard concept of objectivity. Journalists following this path seek out issues that merit illumination and often pique societal conscience, such as inequities of race, poverty, and class. While immersing themselves in their story, they sometimes cross the line from observer to participant. Advocacy/immersion journalism students dig deep into investigative journalism, documentary research, statistical analysis, and narrative storytelling while studying the works and techniques of current practitioners.
The Advanced Professional Certificate
Well-established professionals who wish to develop greater expertise in a specific area and take advantage of Georgetown University’s outstanding course offerings may elect to pursue the Advanced Profession Certificate (APC) instead of the full master’s degree. This five course, 15-credit option is available with the associate dean’s approval for the journalism concentration. The same acceptance standards apply as for the full master’s program. Students may choose to complete an additional 15 credits once the APC is complete in order to obtain a full master’s degree.
