"It's a lot of reading. It's a lot of writing," Rhonda Johnson says with a chuckle, quoting the words of warning she heard before entering the Liberal Studies bachelor's program.
With spotty health, Rhonda wasn't sure she could handle the work. And with a background in computers and a job in systems applications, she was concerned that her study skills might be rusty. She dreamed of finishing her college degree, however, so she took the plunge.
Despite health setbacks, Rhonda found her dream within reach. Georgetown accepted many of her twenty-year-old credits from another college, and she found the faculty very supportive. "The professors really do care about you," she says. "They want you to talk to them. They go out of their way for students."
Rhonda completed her bachelor's degree and started dreaming again. Today she focuses on getting her master's degree through the Liberal Studies program. "I'm taking things day by day, but I'm not putting my life on hold," Rhonda says.
Rhonda now counsels perspective students about the Liberal Studies program. She amends the initial warning she received by telling them this: "It is a lot of reading. It is a lot of writing. You have to be disciplined, and you do have to put some things aside to take it seriously. But it is so worthwhile."
