Bryan Kennedy
Hello Student Leaders,
My name is Bryan Kennedy and I will be your student coordinator for the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders at Georgetown University this summer. My job will be to plan various events to introduce you to the culture of the United States in general and of Georgetown University and the surrounding Washington Metropolitan area.
First let me tell you a little about myself. I will be a senior in the School of Foreign Service here at Georgetown next year, and my area of study is International Politics. Last semester I was studying abroad in Salamanca, Spain, so I absolutely understand what you are about to go through and will try to do
for you what many others did for me to make my time abroad a special one. Other than my studies, I help to direct a tutoring program in DC to help immigrants to the city learn English. After Georgetown, I hope to study law here in the U.S.
We are working on planning many social and cultural events for the program. These may include activities here on campus or in the Washington in general, such as a trip to a baseball game or a bowling, and also trips to other cities in the Northeastern United States, such as New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, that are filled with historical and cultural icons of the United States. These trips, along with your time here in the nation’s capital and the help of myself and others, will give you opportunities to see and grasp a better understanding of what you learn about this country in the classroom, as well as having a great time overall.
As well as this social and cultural aspect, I will be setting up the community service portion of the program. This will allow you to put the leadership skills you learn in the classroom to practical use, and, more importantly, provide an opportunity to positively impact the lives of underprivileged members of the DC community.
Through these and other opportunities we will offer, I hope that you will gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the United States and that we can all have a lot of fun during your time here. We will continue preparing diligently for your arrival, and I am very excited to see all of you in the coming weeks.
Sincerely,
Bryan Kennedy
