The academic seminar, Law: Ethics and Leadership, is designed specifically for students in the Semester in Washington Program at Georgetown University. The seminar meets once a week over the course of the 10-week program. Students learn from assigned readings, lectures, guest speakers, and discussion groups. The seminar utilizes the resources on the Georgetown campus and in Washington to help students craft a better understanding of issues and the legal profession.
In the law program, students tackle a broad range of subjects including civil liberties; constitutional law; international law; public interest law; the legislative process; legal clinics; and foundations of American law and of the legal profession. Students will also participate in discussions with elected officials, policy-makers, and practitioners in the private and public sectors. Guest speakers from a wide array of legal professions, including law firms, federal agencies, and White House staff, address both the principles of law and current debates in the law program. The incorporation of leadership, ethics, and social justice in the field of law are at the forefront of the academic seminar.
Participation in class discussions and respective class assignments constitute 60% of the final grade for the academic seminar and internship.
