SEMESTER IN WASHINGTON AMERICAN POLITICS AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS PROGRAM
As part of Georgetown’s Semester in Washington Program, students studying politics and public affairs gain insider access to the seat of democracy and witness the inner-workings of American government. The Semester in Washington Program in American Politics and Public Affairs draws on the strengths of the nation’s capital and Georgetown University to create an unparalleled learning experience.
The program enables students to examine first-hand the complex issues facing today’s political decision makers, along with the forces that drive policy in Washington. Guest speakers who are leaders in their fields teach students about political parties, public opinion, and current issues in the national debate.
Over the course of the spring semester, students closely examine political campaigns, current legislative priorities, and emerging political issues. Semester in Washington students also take to the Hill, meeting with key legislative staff, policy-makers, federal agents, White House personnel, and elected officials. Conversations with powerful interest groups, lobbyists, and policy experts complete the picture.
Seminars led by Georgetown faculty and small-group discussions provide in-depth insight into the nature of American politics. Internships allow students to put knowledge to action and gain valuable hands-on experience with a leading Washington employer. In the accompanying internship class, students mix theory with practice, reach beyond the work at their selected organizations, and reflect on the ethical and leadership implications of their internships and the role that their work can have on larger society.
Spring Semester Structure
- Academic seminar Mondays and Fridays, 6 credits
- Internship Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, plus accompanying internship class, 3 credits
- Research seminar, 3 credits
Students can also take an elective course on a space-available basis. In total, students can earn between 12 and 15 credits in the Semester in Washington Program. The spring program is for full-time students only.
