SEMESTER IN WASHINGTON HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION AND POLICY PROGRAM
As part of Georgetown’s Semester in Washington Program, students have a unique opportunity to study health care policy and administration in one of the most culturally and politically vibrant cities in the world. From demographic shifts to new technologies, students examine the many factors influencing health care policy today.
The program draws on the strengths and resources of Georgetown University and Washington, D.C., to provide an unparalleled learning experience. Students get a behind-the-scenes view as some of America’s most important domestic policy decisions take shape. What medical services should the United States provide its citizens? Given changing demands on the health care system, what responsibility does government bear to care for its constituents? Guided by Georgetown’s Jesuit tradition of education, students examine these and other challenging questions in a stimulating, rigorous environment. Students meet with guest speakers who are leaders in their fields and participate in in-depth discussions in a small group setting.
Over the course of the spring semester, the Health Care Policy and Administration program presents students with issues from a variety of perspectives, including legislators, journalists, lobbyists, stakeholder groups, and health care institutions. Students take their lessons out into the world as interns in Washington-based health care institutions and non-profit organizations, on Capitol Hill, and in the White House. In the accompanying internship class, students mix theory with practice, reach beyond the work at their selected organizations, and reflect on the ethical and leadership implications of their internships and the role that their work can have on larger society.
Spring Semester Structure
- Academic seminar Mondays and Fridays, 6 credits
- Internship Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, plus accompanying internship class, 3 credits
- Research seminar, 3 credits
Students can also take an elective course on a space-available basis. In total, students can earn between 12 and 15 credits in the Semester in Washington Program. The spring program is for full-time students only.
