SEMESTER IN WASHINGTON JOURNALISM PROGRAM

As part of Georgetown’s Semester in Washington Program, students have a unique opportunity to study journalism in one of the most culturally and politically vibrant cities in the world. Students explore all angles of the journalism profession—learning directly from today’s communication experts and top newsmakers.

The program draws on the strengths and resources of Georgetown University and Washington, D.C., to provide an unparalleled learning experience. At the center of U.S. politics, students gain insider access to examine first-hand the role journalists play in areas such as politics, public opinion, and public policy. In keeping with Georgetown’s Jesuit tradition, the Semester in Washington Program in Journalism also challenges students with a rigorous educational environment that brings theoretical insights to life through practical application.

Over the course of the spring semester, preeminent professors and media practitioners delve deeply into every aspect of journalism to solidify students’ understanding of the relationship between politics and the media, including the media’s historical, social, and ethical influence on American policy-making and, conversely, the impact of politics on the journalism industry.

Small group settings, notable guest speakers, and hands-on assignments give students a further mastery of the core trends shaping the journalism industry and the complex interplay of politics and media. Through internships, students discover and apply best practices and cutting-edge journalism techniques from leaders in the Washington press corps and national and network media outlets. In the accompanying internship class, students mix theory with practice, reach beyond the work at their selected organizations, and reflect on the ethical and leadership implications of their internships and the role that their work can have on larger society.
