SEMESTER IN WASHINGTON LAW AND SOCIETY PROGRAM
As part of Georgetown’s Semester in Washington Program, students have a unique opportunity to study Law and Society in the city where legislation is crafted, debated, and enforced by some of the greatest minds in the land. Students explore all angles of the legal profession at Georgetown University, which counts among its alumni a president and a sitting associate Supreme Court Justice.
The program draws on the strengths and resources of Georgetown University and Washington, D.C., to provide an unparalleled learning experience. At the center of U.S. politics, students enhance their understanding of legal issues and the legal profession. What are the foundations of American law? What role do legal clinics play in today’s communities? Seminar discussions cover a broad range of up-to-the-moment topics, including civil liberties, constitutional law, international law, public interest law, the legislative process, legal clinics, and the foundations of American law and the legal profession.
Over the course of the spring semester, students also engage in small group discussions with notable guest speakers, including leaders representing law firms, federal agencies, international law, policy, research, and non-profit organizations, Capitol Hill, and the White House. In keeping with Georgetown’s Jesuit tradition, the Semester in Washington Program in Law challenges students with a rigorous educational environment that brings theoretical insights to life through practical application.
Through internships, students conduct real-world projects, work hand-in-hand with leaders in their field, and thereby forge valuable connections in a private sector, government, or nonprofit organization. In the accompanying internship class, they mix theory with practice, reach beyond the work at their selected organizations, and reflect on the ethical and leadership implications of their internships and the role that their work can have on larger society.
Spring Semester Structure
Academic seminar Mondays and Fridays, 6 credits
Internship Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, plus accompanying internship class, 3 credits
Research seminar, 3 credits
Students can also take an elective course on a space-available basis. In total, students can earn between 12 and 15 credits in the Semester in Washington Program. The spring program is for full-time students only.
