The BMW Center for German and European Studies is one of three North American "Centers of Excellence" founded in 1990 thanks to a generous ten-year grant from the German government administered by the DAAD.
At the conclusion of the original grant, BMW AG's gift provided the Center's operating endowment, thereby securing its fundamental mission: to provide a focal point for scholarly research on Germany and Europe, and to cultivate a new generation of transatlantic leaders.
Academics
The BMW Center is devoted to the interdisciplinary study of Europe, and features an intensive program of graduate instruction leading to the Master of Arts in German and European Studies (MAGES), which is designed to prepare students for professional careers in international business, government, or non-governmental organizations, as well as for academic careers.
CGES
Faculty and visiting scholars at the BMW Center are engaged in a variety of research projects, which are the subject of ongoing seminar series and regular academic conferences. The Center's location in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown also makes it a preferred forum for policymakers, diplomats, and visiting dignitaries.
The Center is a member of the American Consortium on European Union Studies (ACES), an EU-sponsored network of area universities involved in research and outreach relating to European integration and transatlantic relations. The BMW Center also houses the editorial office of German Politics and Society, an interdisciplinary journal in German studies.
An overview of activities in 2004-2005 is provided in the BMW Center's annual report.
