Prince of Asturias Distinguished Visiting Professorship


The Chair

In recognition of Georgetown University's longstanding commitment to the study of Europe and international affairs, Endesa, S.A. established the Prince of Asturias Chair in Spanish Studies in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service in 1997, as part of an ongoing program to promote Spanish culture in academia. Endesa's generous gift, named in honor of His Royal Highness Prince Felipe de Borbón y Grecia, supports the appointment of leading scholars at Georgetown, and provides a focus for programs and activities in Washington that enhance U.S.-Spanish academic relations.

The Prince of Asturias Visiting Professor is a professor or renowned specialist in Political Science and related fields (such as Political Administration Science, Public Policy, and International Relations), as well as History, Economics, Sociology and Humanities or similar fields of knowledge taught at Georgetown University.

The Professor is involved in the following activities, all within the context of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and the BMW Center for German and European Studies:

  • Teaching courses for Georgetown graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Research.
  • Participating in academic activities in the Georgetown University and Washington DC area.
  • Organizing academic activities.

The current Prince of Asturias Professor is Albert Carreras from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona, Spain). Professor Carreras' biography and teaching plans will be available shortly on the CGES website.

Selection Process

The selection of the Prince of Asturias Professor takes place in Spain, in the period December - February of each year. The Selection Committee, with H.R.H. the Prince of Asturias as Honorary President, is composed of five voting member: two Spanish University Professors, selected by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport; the Rector of a Spanish University or a representative selected among the rectors of all Spanish Universities; two tenured University Professors selected by the President of Georgetown University. The sixth non-voting member is selected by Fundación Endesa.

The Committee recommends three candidates to Georgetown University, which then chooses one of these three.
