Financial Aid

The MAGES program and its associated joint Ph.D. programs offer a limited number of scholarships and fellowships each year to incoming and continuing students. Every applicant to the MAGES program will automatically be considered for this merit-based aid, which is based on an assessment of the outstanding academic qualifications and promise.

Two typical awards for MAGES-only applicants is one-half or one-quarter tuition. The maximum award for MAGES/Ph.D. applicants is tuition plus stipend ($33,408 plus approximately $18,000 for the 2007-08 academic year). Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis, and decisions on continuation are based on maintenance of full-time status, a minimum 3.5 Grade Point Average (on a 4.0 scale), and the availability of funds.

Because the need for financial aid is always greater than our Center alone can accommodate, candidates are highly encouraged to look into independent sources of funding at the same time as they are applying to the program. Candidates will not receive admissions decisions and financial aid award amounts from Georgetown until mid-March, at which time it would be too late to start looking for additional aid.

Students may find information on outside grants, scholarships, fellowships, and need-based aid on our website for Additional Funding and from the Office of Student Financial Services at http://finaid.georgetown.edu/.

Flynn Summer Grants

Flynn Summer Grants are intended to enable students to pursue summer activities such as internships, language study, or research projects that might otherwise be financially unfeasible. There is an annual limit of $1,500 per student, and a life-time limit (Flynn Grants and Research Funding combined) of $2,500 per student. Funding is awarded on a competitive basis, and the exact amount awarded is dependent on the quality of the proposal, cost of the project, availability of outside funding, and overall number of projects the Center elects to support in a given funding cycle. Current students should refer to the MAGES Handbook for rules and restrictions.

Research Funding

The BMW Center also has a certain amount of funding for which students can apply to support ongoing student research. Current MAGES and MAGES/Ph.D. students can apply for up to two grants of up to $500 each to cover the costs of research for master's/doctoral theses or for presenting papers at scholarly conferences. Eligible expenses are costs incidental to research, such as travel to archives, as well as expenses related to presenting papers at scholarly conferences, such as registration fees, travel and accommodation. Grants are awarded competitively based on the specificity of the project and its relevance to the student's course of study. Students are limited to one research grant per academic year. Current students should refer to the MAGES Handbook for rules and application procedures.
