Lifting the Iron Curtain: Twenty Years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall

February 6 - 7, 2009

Georgetown University, Washington, DC

The year 1989 represents a milestone in the history not only of Europe, but the world. The Berlin Wall fell, the Iron Curtain was lifted, and East met West once again. How has Europe changed since the events of 1989? Why did these events take place? What are the lasting consequences for the rest of the world?

In order to reflect the numerous faces of Europe’s changing role in the international community, this conference is multidisciplinary in nature. Paper topics are open to all relevant disciplines and interdisciplinary approaches. Abstracts might consider but are not limited to historical, political, legal, economic, cultural, and social perspectives. Possible topics and subjects areas could include, but are not limited to:

  • The Impact of German Unification on the European Union
  • Post Soviet Relations with Europe
  • Economic Impact of Post Communist Transitions
  • The Collapse of Communism

At the close of the conference, one paper will be selected to receive ‘Best Paper’ award on the basis of its academic quality, as judged by the panel commentators. The selected paper will receive a monetary reward.
