Language Requirements

While formal language study is not part of the MAGES curriculum, by the end of the program, students must have proven oral proficiency in a major European language other than English and reading ability in a second European language. It is no longer required that one of these languages be German.

Upon entry, students should possess the equivalent of six college semesters of their first foreign language in order to be prepared for the oral exam. All students must pass an oral proficiency examination for their first foreign language with a grade of "good" or better by the end of the first year of study. They must pass a reading comprehension exam in their second foreign language by the end of the second year of study. In preparation for these exams, students may enroll in up to one language course each semester in addition to the regular MAGES curriculum. Students pay no extra tuition for these audited language courses at Georgetown University.

Native speakers of European languages other than English are exempt from the oral language examination. Native speaker status is determined on an individual basis by Georgetown University.
