Queer European Cinema Film Series

The BMW Center for German and European Studies and the German department at Georgetown University are cosponsoring a series of lectures and film screenings designed to introduce the Georgetown community to queer films from several European countries, including Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Hungary, Spain, and England.

Recent years have shown how central sexual conduct has been to political life. ¡§Moral values¡¨ surrounding the definition of family and marriage are said to have been an important factor in the outcome of the last U.S. election. The recent political assassinations in the Netherlands demonstrate that sexual tolerance in Europe¡Xas indicated by new laws about gay and lesbian marriage¡Xand ethnic hatred seem to interact in violent and unpredictable ways. Through a series of eight films and accompanying lectures, we will explore and appreciate how filmmakers over the last century have told stories about queer love, grief, and pride, and have grappled with larger questions about the relationship between democracy and human differences.

Professor Katrin Sieg, who teaches Cultural Theory in the BMW Center, is bringing this series to the GU campus, and has arranged for introductions and discussions to accompany each screening. The Queer European Cinema series is cosponsored by the Department of German. Click here to download the poster and schedule.
