Living in DC

Living in the nation's capital is one of the highlights of being a MAGES student. From museums to theater, sports to international cuisine, students never run out of things to do in the city. Check out Georgetown University's Washington, D.C. webpage for information on the capital and links to D.C. websites.

Housing

Although there is no on-campus housing available for graduate students, the Off-Campus Housing Office is a useful resource in locating housing near the University. On its website (http://och.georgetown.edu), students can view housing listings by categories such as type (group house, individual studio apartment, one-bedroom apartment), location, cost, amenities, etc.

In addition, it contains a very useful Student Handbook, which is designed to assist students in making decisions about living off campus, and to enable them to develop a housing search strategy. It contains information on how to go about finding suitable housing, what rights students have as tenants, and where to get help if they have any problems. Students can arrange to stay in on-campus residence halls during the summer while looking for housing. For more information, contact Off Campus Housing at (202) 687-7764.

Every summer, the BMW Center also sets up a New Student Housing Network for the incoming MAGES students. The new students can view apartment listings around the D.C. area and talk online to each other to combine efforts in the housing search.

Parking and Transportation

The majority of MAGES students live close enough to the University to walk, bike or take the bus to campus. The Georgetown University Transportation Shuttle (GUTS) also provides free transportation between the University and select Washington area Metrorail stops including Dupont Circle in D.C. and Rosslyn, Virginia. Students who commute by car and live outside the District of Columbia or nearby parts of Virginia are eligible to enter a lottery during the summer to obtain a University parking permit. Details about the GUTS bus and parking lottery are available from the Office of Transportation Management.

Student Health Service

The Student Primary Care Clinic provides primary medical care through an out-patient clinic located on campus. The Health Service Clinic provides diagnostic evaluation and treatment for both illness and injury to all registered Georgetown students. Although basic Health Service fees are included in tuition, the expenses of x-rays, emergency room care, laboratory studies, vaccinations, specialty consultations, and hospitalizations are the personal financial responsibility of the student. The main campus clinic can be reached at (202) 687-4500.

The District of Columbia requires that all students who are under 26 years of age on the day of registration be immunized against Poliomyelitis, Measles, Mumps, Rubella (German Measles), Diphtheria, and Tetanus. This requirement is strictly enforced and no one may be allowed to register or attend classes until compliance is documented. The only exemptions are individuals with documented religious prohibitions to immunization or who have impaired immune functioning that would make immunization hazardous. Proof of immunization forms will be mailed to each new student upon acceptance. The forms should be filled out by the student's physician or local Health Department; family records are not accepted.

Student Insurance

At the time of registration, all students will be required to show proof of a medical insurance policy that will stay in effect for the entire academic year. For those students who do not have adequate insurance coverage, Georgetown University offers a 12-month international medical insurance policy, with the option of dental coverage, that can be tailored to specific medical and financial needs. The premium for this insurance plan is automatically added to the tuition bill of every student who takes nine or more credit hours per semester so that students may pay for it with loans or personal resources. Coverage may be waived upon written proof of adequate medical insurance from another source. Brochures describing the plan benefits and enrollment procedures, as well as how to remove the automatic charges from the student account, will be mailed to each incoming student. For more complete information, call the Student Insurance department at (202) 687-4883.
