Workshops at Georgetown University

·    March 19th, 2002 "Local Governance in Colombia: an Afro-Colombian perspective" Speech by Jaime Mosquera, Mayor of Buenaventura.

·  February 25th, 2004: The Embassy of Colombia and the Colombia Program, in association with the Afro-Latino Development Alliance presented "Afro-Colombia: A View on Political, Socio-Economic, and Cultural Dimensions of Afro Descendant populations in Colombia." Panelists included The Honorable Edgard Torres, Vice President of the House of Representatives of Colombia, The Honorable Piedad Cordoba Ruiz, Senator of Colombia and Governor Julio Ibarguen Mosquera of Chocó.  The presentation was made at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.

·  February 26th, 2004: The Embassy of Colombia and the Colombia Program, in association with the Afro-Latino Development Alliance presented the Colombian musical group "PASOS POR COLOMBIA."  Pasos por Colombia are recognized for their innovative interpretations of Afro-Colombia dance. Their performances are examples of the rich contributions that Afro descendants have made to Colombian culture.  The performance took place at the Copley Formal Lounge at Georgetown University.“

·  March 27th, 2006 “Building the National Documentation Center for Afro-Colombian Culture in Quibdó, Colombia” Georgetown University’s Colombia Program at the Center for Latin American Studies, with generous support from the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Colombia is very pleased to host a Visiting Mission of the Technical University of Chocó – UTCH-, the Colombian Ministry of Culture, the Colombian Institute for Anthropology and History – ICANH – and the National Library of Colombia, The Colombia Program, with support from USAID and the US Embassy in Bogota, has provided over the last two years technical and financial support to the creation of the National Documentation Center for Afro Colombian Culture. The Center for Latin American Studies, through its Colombia Program and Brazilian Studies Program, are committed to further support this highly relevant and innovative Colombian initiative.

Workshops in Colombia

·  Event at the University Tecnologica del Choco- Georgetown University and Howard University. April 2003
Between April 19th and 23rd, the Colombia Program organized a mission to Quibdó, the capital city of the Department of Chocó, with 2 representatives from Howard University, the Director of the Afro-Latino Development Alliance and one legislative assistant from  the US Congress. The purpose of this mission was to sign an academic cooperative agreement between Howard University and the University of Choco for: i) faculty exchange, in particular for UTCH professors; ii) support for new curriculum design at UTCH in specific areas; and iii) common research activities in mutually prioritized academic fields. The cooperation will provide a unique opportunity for mutual innovative academic benefits, while further professional strengthening of UTCH will contribute to socioeconomic development for Chocó. Among those present at the signing event were Colombia’s First Lady, Colombia’s Ombudsman, the United States Ambassador to Colombia, the Japanese Ambassador to Colombia, the USAID deputy Administrator, the USAID/Colombia Mission Director.

Workshop organized with the support of Ministerio de Cultura, Instituto Colombiano de Antropología y de Historia – ICANH, Programa Colombia de la Universidad de Georgetown / USAID, Fondo de Promoción Cultural de la Embajada de los Estados Unidos en Colombia.
Special Guest Mr. Howard Dodson, Chief of the Schomburg Center for Research on Black Culture in NYC. November 14 and 15, 2005 in the city of Quibdó. The purpose of these workshops was to present the proposal and a Plan of Action of the Center to universities and national and international entities interested in participating in the consolidation of the Center.  The workshop had the participation of Dr. Kris Lane, Wakefield Distinguished Associate Professor of History at William and Mary College (Williamsburg, VA), an expert in Afro-Colombian history who is currently a Fullbright Scholar performing research and teaching at the National University in Bogotá, representatives from the Colombia Program of Georgetown University, and local representatives to be determined.
