Representative and Participatory Democracy: Publications

  • Participación y fortalecimiento institucional a nivel local en Colombia. Miguel Ceballos y Gerard Martin. Javeriana University, Bogotá, 2001. Research for this book was financed by National Endowment for Democracy and US-AID. Printing and distribution was financed by the Colombian Ministry of the Interior. The book was distributed, with accompanying letters from National Federation of Mayors, National Federation of City Councils and National Federation of Governors, to all mayors, city councils, departments, NGOs and other relevant stakeholders. The book identifies the formal channels of participation in Colombian Law, how they function at the local level, public institutions at the municipal, departmental, regional, and national level that have within their objectives the promotion of citizen participation through technical aid, training, and financial incentives, and lessons learned in public and private projects. It also includes a model for a survey to map participation on the local level, and contains contact information on all relevant stakeholders in Colombia.
