The oldest of the Institute's annual public affairs activities, the Weintal program awards scholarships to MSFS students, bestows prizes for diplomatic reporting, and provides a forum for an address on international affairs. These activities are funded from an endowment established by the will of Edward Weintal, a Polish diplomat and diplomatic correspondent for Newsweek magazine.
2009 Edward Weintal Prize for Diplomatic Reporting
The 34th annual Weintal Prize for Diplomatic reporting will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2009. The event will be held from 6:00 - 7:15 p.m. in the Auditorium, Intercultural Center.
Selected for their outstanding reporting and analysis over the past year, the 2009 Awardees are Deborah Amos, National Public Radio, and Jane Mayer, the New Yorker.
Receiving Special Weintal Citations are Carol Ciacomo, New York Times, and H.D.S. Greenway, Boston Globe.
Marvin Kalb, Weintal Trustee, will lead the awardees in a panel discussion, "Obama's Open Hand to the World: Will It Work?
Edward Weintal Scholars
The Weintal trust also provides scholarships for graduate students in the Master of Science in Foreign Service program. The intent of the full two-year scholarships is to reward U.S. and foreign students with excellent public service records and great potential. Mr. Rafael Frankel Lee will complete the second year of the scholarship during the 2009-2010 academic year. Kevin Massy was awarded a scholarship beginning in the 2010 academic year.
