Taking An Essay Test




You prepared thoroughly for the history exam, but you were disappointed by the grade on your essay question. Follow the directions outlined in the Exam Preparation tip sheet and use the following tips to boost your scores.

  1. Read the instructions and survey the entire test.
  2. Estimate how much time you need to answer each question.
  3. Answer easier questions first to build confidence.
  4. Read questions several times to ensure you understand what is being asked.
  5. Underline key words such as analyze, discuss, define, or describe.
  6. Take a few moments to brainstorm and create a rough outline.
  7. Use the test question to write a thesis statement.
  8. Support each major idea with specific examples and detailed information.
  9. Write a brief concluding paragraph.
  10. Try to save about five minutes to read your response and to edit your essay.
