How to Study Effectively for An Exam

Good time management skills and detailed notes are ingredients towards achieving top grades on exams.

  1. Study daily by reviewing notes and keeping up with reading assignments.
  2. Plan an exam study schedule by trying to study an hour or two each day.
  3. Find out all you can about the test, i.e. identification, short answers, multiple choice questions, essay questions.
  4. Organize your notes into topics and subtopics and create summary sheets.
  5. Make sure that you make the connections between the various topics.
  6. Recite notes to remember the information! Picking up information takes 15% of your time, while remembering takes 85% of your time.
  7. Create possible test questions and use them to practice for the exam.
  8. Look over past quizzes or examinations you may have taken in the course.
  9. Use memory techniques (i.e. acronyms, rhymes, images) to help retain "difficult to remember" material.
  10. Try to find a study partner or form a study group; it's a great way to master the information.
