Avoiding Plagiarism

Plagiarism can easily be prevented - here are some tips:

  1. Don't wait until the last minute to write a research paper or essay. Students often make careless mistakes because of cramming at the last minute.
  2. Document your sources. Whether it is a summary, paraphrase, or direct quotation, a citation must follow.
  3. Take careful and accurate notes while doing research.
  4. Learn the appropriate ways to document sources, such as MLA, APA, or Turabian. If you are uncertain, then consult the appropriate handbook.
  5. Avoid the "paper mill" research paper sites. Purchasing someone else's work constitutes academic dishonesty.
  6. Cite any information that you take from a website.
  7. Follow the professor's instructions. If you are told to work alone on an assignment, then this means you cannot collaborate with another student.
  8. Do not "recycle" your work. If you have written and submitted an assignment for one course, and you want to submit this paper for another course, this can be considered cheating.
  9. Be aware of ways that professors can identify plagiarism (i.e www.turnitin.com, google.com).
  10. Review the guidelines in the Georgetown University Academic Integrity Code.
