NCAA Rules to be Aware of During Your Employment in the ARC

NCAA legislation states 16.01.1 states: "A student-athlete shall not receive any extra benefit…If the student-athlete receives an extra benefit not authorized by NCAA legislation; the individual is ineligible in all sports." Bylaw 16.02.3 further states "An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution's athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete's relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation."

You, as a student employee of the ARC, represent the institution of Georgetown University, so you must be familiar with what constitutes an “extra benefit.” Basically if you would not offer a benefit to every other student at Georgetown University, you cannot offer it to a student-athlete. Some, though by no means all, prohibited actions follow below:

  • YOU MAY NOT: Buy a student-athlete's meal, or a snack, or a soda, any food item, or let the student-athlete use your ID card.
  • YOU MAY NOT: Give a student-athlete a ride, money for the Metro, money for a cab, or let a student-athlete use your own car (even if the student-athlete pays for gas).
  • YOU MAY NOT: Buy a student-athlete a book, or a magazine, or a newspaper, a planner, or any other school supplies; even if it is for an assignment you are working on with that student-athlete.
  • YOU MAY NOT: Allow a student to make a call from your cell phone, use your calling card to make a long distance call, or make that call for him/her.
  • YOU MAY NOT: Buy a student-athlete a computer disk, or any other computer materials.
  • YOU MAY NOT: Give the student-athlete complimentary admission to anything, or give coupons not available to all other students.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT IS ALLOWED, DON'T DO IT!! Ask first.

If you feel any of the above rules have been violated or if you take part in or witness behavior which makes you uncomfortable contact an academic counselor immediately. Please do not wait! Reporting violations in a timely manner is vital.
