General Tips for Tutors




  1. Get to know your tutee.
  2. Remember your tutee's privacy.
  3. Be patient.
  4. Be flexible.
  5. Be adaptable.
  6. Be punctual and prepared.
  7. Avoid asking "Yes" and "No" questions.
  8. Start at a level will within grasp of the tutee.
  9. Do not attempt too much.
  10. Try to explain things as simply as possible to your tutee.
  11. Listen - center your attention on the tutee.
  12. When a tutee's response is wrong, tell him/her the correct response.
  13. Admit it if you do not know the answer.
  14. Do not interrupt when the tutee is talking.
  15. Be sure the tutee understands the information.
  16. Do not do the actual work for the tutee.
  17. Drop the authoritative teacher role.
  18. Give lots of praise.
