Georgetown University (GU) requires students enrolled in a study abroad program to be enrolled in the Study Abroad Student Health Insurance Plan arranged by CMI Insurance Worldwide, an insurance agency. In addition, these students must be enrolled in another health insurance plan that covers medical expenses of at least $100,000 per illness and $100,000 per injury while they are in the United States. These requirements enable students to obtain the necessary health care while abroad; if necessary, to return to the United States with medical assistance; and, to obtain the necessary health care upon their return home. Coordination Between the Study Abroad Plan and the Premier PlanIf a student is enrolled in the Premier Plan and the Study Abroad Plan, the Study Abroad Plan will pay first. In addition, the Study Abroad Plan enhances the Premier Plan's out-of-network worldwide benefits. Therefore, students are encouraged to be insured under both plans. However, if a student is insured under the Premier Plan during their entire duration abroad, they may waive out of the Study Abroad Plan and receive a credit on their student account by submitting a completed Study Abroad Student Health Insurance Waiver Form. Study Abroad Plan PremiumThe charge for the Study Abroad Plan is $70 for any part of the following trimesters:
If you are required and eligible to enroll in the Study Abroad Plan, a plan charge will be placed on your student account. If your Georgetown University sponsored time abroad falls within two trimesters, regardless of the number of days abroad, the charge will be $140. Likewise, if your time abroad falls within three trimesters, the charges on your student account will equal $210. If you remain abroad beyond the trimester(s) for which you paid, your coverage will cease and you are responsible for purchasing another insurance policy independently, such as from CMI Insurance. Study Abroad Plan Identification Card and ACE Description of CoverageProgram coordinators, as designated by your academic department, distribute the Study Abroad Plan Identification Card and ACE Description of Coverage to students registered in overseas programs. However, enrollment is contingent upon the plan's eligibility provisions; the period of coverage provisions; and, the plan payment. |
