Magis RowBased on the Jesuit idea of Magis, a latin word meaning more, we are seeking students who want to do more in their junior and senior years. The goal of Magis Row is to create a series of intentional communities within each townhouse, where students share a particular interest and want to explore that interest with a faculty/staff member through the lens of academics and social justice. Students will have the ability to form their own communities and choose a faculty/staff advisor. The advisor will engage in reflective dialogue and thoughtful action with the students in the community.
Information on Magis Row
The Georgetown Minority Achievement Community (GMAC) is a new living and learning community dedicated to promoting minority achievement with a heightened focus on academic development and career preparation. GMAC will accomplish this by ensuring the minority community takes full advantage of all available resources and by doing everything we can to aid in this process. Founders include: Ross Anderson, Josh Chang, Jamar Gould and Dante Jefferson.
Catholic Social Justice Community The Catholic Social Justice Community is a community founded on Christ's command to love our neighbors as ourselves, and is committed to raising awareness of, and enacting itself, the core principles of Catholic Social Teaching. Building off of Georgetown's strong tradition of service and social justice, this community will seek, through outreach, lectures & events, and hands-on experience to find practical solutions and innovative approaches to bring justice and human compassion to our local and global community by exploring deeply the fundamental dichotomy of contemplation and action that characterizes every life.
The Global and Interfaith Living Community In this community, we want to expose the interconnection of faith, culture, and community. We hope to promote tolerance, understanding, and learning by living among culturally and spiritually diverse people. We want to pursue these issues and recognize the commonalities between different experiences.
Community for Academic Integrity Members of the Community for Academic Integrity will examine and discuss issues that relate to integrity and academic integrity to come to a well-informed understanding of what each means and how each should affect their decision-making. Members will also reach out to those in the Georgetown community who need or want to come to a deeper understanding of academic integrity.
Carroll House Carroll House will examine the relationship between the development of religion and politics throughout Georgetown's history. We will put on events that will foster knowledge and encourage a dialogue regarding these topics.
Georgetown Green House Georgetown Green House is a community of students who believe that sustainable living is easy when done in a smart and collaborative manner. Green House works to strengthen Georgetown's commitment to more ecologically responsible practices by leading through example. Our community hopes that students will learn about the practicalities of environmentalism (cutting down on paper use, using tote bags, riding bicycles, composting, recycling old cell phones, etc.), so that they can live their lives in a more carbon-conscious fashion, and so that the concept of "environmentalism" becomes less abstract.
Hip Hop Justified The primary interest of the Hip Hop Justified community is to redefine and reinterpret the Hip Hop movement in unique and positive approaches. Our objective is to use HIP HOP as a mechanism of social justice for the Georgetown community and greater DC area. We want to move away from the mainstream ideals of Hip Hop by exploring the true Hip Hop Revolution in terms of its social, economic, political, and racial elements.
Education and Literacy in the D.C. Community Kelly, Catherine, Laura, Megan and Brigit are excited to be a part of "Education and Literacy in the D.C. Community" which centers around social justice issues in the educational system of Washington D.C. The mission of our community is to raise awareness about the issues pertaining to the educational system in Washington D.C. and, in doing so, to challenge the Georgetown community to become active in addressing these issues. We hope that, through our work, we will give students of the D.C. Public Schools the opportunity to have better educations, that we will offer Georgetown students the opportunity to do more service and discover more about their own educations, and that we will work together with the surrounding communities for the betterment of our educational futures.
Justice and Diversity in Action
Beyond Georgetown: Minorities at Work Beyond Georgetown: Minorities at Work is a living and learning (community) dedicated to networking within the minority community. Latinas for the Advancement of D.C.'s Youth (LADY) LADY's (Latinas for the Advancement of D.C.'s Youth) primary focus will be to inspire and assist D.C.'s disadvantaged youth through a commitment to service. We seek to motivate students to set higher standards for themselves than those society has set upon them. We will help them see the importance of hope for a better future. Through college fairs, workshops, and unity we hope to reach these goals.
Women and Spirituality The Women and Spirituality Magis Row House was founded by GU Sisters for Christ who recognize the important intersection between academics and spirituality. We believe that faith is a vital part of personal and professional success. We hope that our home will be a safe haven for women of all faith traditions to contemplate, discuss, fellowship, and grow in their own faith, while simultaneously fostering inter-religious dialogue.
The Global Health Activism and Awareness Project Inspired by Georgetown’s ever growing leadership role in the global health community, the members of the Global Health Activism and Awareness Project have come together in the hopes of focusing and energizing Georgetown's varied programs on the subject. Members with varied interests and educational niches come from Georgetown's different schools to bring to bear their own unique insights into global health problems. In addition to adding to their own knowledge, the members of the Project aim to facilitate permanent and robust lines of communication between the respective programs of the SFS, College and NHS. Furthermore, they hope to make these new collaborations useful, educational, and interesting to the Georgetown community as a whole.
Nobody Home The goal of Nobody Home is to raise awareness in the Georgetown community about D.C.'s homeless epidemic by postering, tabling, and organizing lectures by representatives from Hannah House and So Others Might Eat (SOME).
