Procedures for Starting a New GSO-sponsored Club

Step 1: Draft a Constitution

When a group of graduate students wish to start a new club, the first several informal gatherings of this group should concentrate on drafting a Constitution.  GSO policy requires that all graduate clubs keep an updated Constitution on file in the GSO office.  The Constitution will be the backbone of the club for its entire existence, and so it is important that it reflects the ethos of the group.

To give you some idea of what is expected, you should review Article VIII of the GSO Constitution, which outlines the criteria for becoming a GSO sanctioned group.  Further, you may use an existing Club's Constitution as an example.

Step 2: Submit a draft of the Constitution to the Chair of the GSO Constitution Committee.

The Constitution Committee is chaired by the Vice-President- Masters of the GSO.  The Constitution Committee will review the Constitution for major stylistic and procedural errors, and will offer substantive suggestions when warranted.  Some back and forth with the Committee should be expected.  When the Committee believes the Constitution is ready to be reviewed by the entire GSO assembly, the chair will recommend to the President that the matter be considered at the next meeting.

Step 3: Attend the GSO meeting where the Constitution is discussed.

Often the President will ask the leaders of the nascent club to offer a few words of introduction and answer any questions posed by the assembly.

Step 4 (if necessary):  Revise Constitution in light of assembly's suggestions.
