While that was just a joke, remember that the GUPDA is here to help you in your future career. One of the most important things you can do right now is network. The person sitting next to you in the seminar, the postdoc you meet at the happy hour....these are your peers. In the short-term they have centrifuge rotors you might need, culture reagents you have just run out of, and somebody to go for coffee with when your own lab hates you for using the last of the PBS. In the long-term they will be on review boards and study sections, they will be journal editors and grant co-ordinators. In other words, they are very important people. Get to know your peers now. It will prevent you looking like a brown-noser later!
