The Georgetown University Postdoctoral Association (GUPDA)

The GUPDA is a newly established association here at Georgetown University.  Although in it's infancy, we are focusing our efforts on multiple fronts.  First,  we are continuing to gain recognition and support from the Georgetown University faculty and staff as we continue to strengthen our organizational structure.  Second, we are working hard to reach out to all M.D., Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. persons who do not currently hold a permanent full-time faculty position at Georgetown University in order to extend an invitation to join our association.

Our Mission

Our mission is to establish a Georgetown University Postdoctoral Association that can provide a voice, and seek positive change, for postdocs here at GU. Some of our goals include:  providing a forum for social gatherings and  scientific camaraderie, providing information to new and existing postdocs  (egs. welcoming committees, foreign visas, grant opportunities, housing locations, etc…), providing a forum for discussion of postdoctoral issues (egs. career development, salary,  benefits, ) and connecting our postdocs with national organizations such as the National Postdoc Association, AAAS, Next Wave and Sigma Xi.

Charter of the Georgetown University Postdoctoral Association

The purpose of the Georgetown University Postdoctoral Association (GUPDA) is to create, nourish, and sustain an academic community for Postdoctoral Scholars at Georgetown University thereby fostering recognition and positive change. Membership shall include all M.D., Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. persons who do not currently hold a permanent full-time faculty position at Georgetown University.  Specifically, persons holding such titles as postdoctoral trainee, postdoctoral fellow, research fellow, research associate, or med-center fellow are eligible for membership.  Adjunct faculty holding temporary faculty positions are also eligible for membership.

Our goals include, but are not limited to:

  1. Providing a social forum for camaraderie and scientific exchange.
  2. Welcoming new and mentoring existing Postdoctoral Scholars.
  3. Establishing collaborations and innovations across departments and disciplines.
  4. Enhancing the postdoctoral experience and career development.
  5. Serving collaboratively with the university administration to advise and discuss employment issues that apply to Postdoctoral Scholars.

The Georgetown University Postdoctoral Association is not, and shall not, serve as a bargaining unit for any employee of the university in keeping with the standards established by the National Postdoctoral Association.
