Roast Celebrates Another Successful Year

(04.29.2008) - The Hellenic
Association and Georgetown Orthodox Christian Fellowship held our annual
Lamb Roast, in celebration of Orthodox Easter and the end of another successful year for our organization. Attendees included students in the OCF,
staff of the Embassy of Greece, Georgetown Greek Department, Georgetown Classics
Department and other prominent members of the Washington, DC Greek community.
We thank everyone who supported our organization this year and look forward to
seeing you in the Fall.

"Development in the Balkans: Perspectives on the Role of Greece" Lecture

- As a follow up to a 2006
lecture hosted by the
Georgetown Hellenic Association,
we recently hosted "Development
in the Balkans: Perspectives on
the Role of Greece," featuring
Ambassador Alexandros Mallias
(Greek Ambassador to the U.S.),
Professor Andrew Natsios
(Georgetown Professor and former
USAID Administrator) and John
Sitilides (Chairman, Southeast
Europe Project - Woodrow Wilson
Center). The event
focused on many facets of
developing the region, such as
Greek assistance with legitimacy
and transparency in nations in
the region; the importance of
Greek foreign direct investment
and the engagement of Greece in
furthering institutional
sustainability in these nations.
Hellenext Hosts
Masterclass with Ambassador Alexandros Mallias
(04.02.08)
- The Hellenext Iniative
recently hosted a Masterclass
with H.E. Alexandros Mallias,
Greek Ambassador to the U.S. Held
at the residence of the
Ambassador, the event provided
an opportunity for students to
understand the dynamics of
serving in a public role and the
current issues facing Greece on
the international agenda,
including the naming of FYROM
and other relevant geopolitical
issues.
American Hellenic
Institute Dinner '08: Honoring His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of
America, Melina Kanakaredes and others

- For the second year,
Georgetown Hellenic Association
students attended the American
Hellenic Institute's annual
service awards and dinner, held
on March 15. The annual
gathering awards individuals for
their service to the Hellenic
community and included the
Inaugural Religious Freedom
Award, given to His Eminence
Archbishop Demitrios of America,
and Emmy Award Winning Actress
Melina Kanakaredes. It was
another great opportunity to
introduce members of our
organization, including both
undergraduate and graduate
students to the Washington , DC
Greek community.

Big Fat Greek Dinner
- Sixth Annual Success Draws Over 200
(12.08.07)
- A Georgetown tradition, the
sixth annual Big Fat Greek
Dinner was held on Friday,
December 7, and featured a
buffet dinner and dancing by the
GU Hellenic Association.
The event drew more than 200
guests, including members of the
Georgetown University community,
Embassy of Greece, Members of
the U.S. Department of State and
Washington, DC Greek Community
at large. We thank those
who attended and helped make the
event another success.

Students Engage in Conversation
with GU Professor George Tenet

- As part of its "Masterclass"
series, a series of discussion
with distinguished members in
the Greek-American Community,
the
Next Generation
Initiative/Hellenext
hosted a conversation with
Former CIA Director George Tenet.
The event highlighted Tenet's
history as a public servant and
questions about his experience
in both the public sector and as
a professor at Georgetown.
Attendees included students from
the American University,
University of Maryland, George
Washington University and George
Mason Hellenic Associations.

Students Raise Funds for Greek
Fire Victims

(09.21.07)
- As an outreach endeavor to
support the victims of the
wildfires in Greece which have
damaged parts of the
Peloponnesse and mainland
Greece, the GU Hellenic
Association held a baklava sale
in Red Square on campus from
September 17-19 and will donate
the proceeds to Habitat for
Humanity Greece. We
greatly thank the benevolence of
the Georgetown community who
made the event a success.
Additionally, we greatly
appreciate the ongoing support
of Georgetown Campus Ministry
and the GU Orthodox Christian
Fellowship.
New Greek Art
Gallery Debuts at Metropolitan Museum in NYC

- Recently, as part of a 15-year
campaign to restore its
galleries, the Metropolitan
Museum of Art in New York City
debuted its new collection of
Hellenic Artifacts. The
galleries feature art from the
900 B.C. and fourth century
A.D., covering Greece and
Southern Italy, presenting the
Greek influence on Roman Art.
The collection, which features
ten rooms, centered around a new
atrium modeled in classical
architecture, chronologically
presents the art's development
over this era. For more

GU Hellenic
Association Ends Academic Year with Lamb Roast

- As an annual tradition, the
Georgetown Hellenic Association
celebrated Orthodox Easter,
along with the Georgetown
University Orthodox Christian
Fellowship (OCF) on April 22
with a Lamb Roast. Despite
the rain, the students and
several guests feasted on the
lamb and other Greek delights.
It was another successful year
for our organization, which
featured several major events,
including a visit by Greek
Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyanni
in September 2006 and a meeting
with Senator Sarbanes and Dir.
George Tenet in November 2006.
We will resume in September
2007.

- Recently, Mr. Leon Stavrou,
patron of the GU Hellenic
Association and Executive Director of
Hellenext, a
non-profit initiative, was
featured in Kathimerini,
Greece's Daily Newspaper.
The article discussed Stavrou's
commitment to connecting the
current generation of
Greek-American youth with
dignitaries in the Hellenic
Community. Since its
founding in 2005, the
Hellenext initiative has
provided networking
opportunities with prominent
figures such as: George
Stephanopoulos, George Tenet,
Senator Paul Sarbanes, Rep. John
Sarbanes and more. We
greatly thank Mr. Stavrou for
his ongoing support and

Big Fat Greek Dinner
- 5th Annual Sold Out Success
(12.02.06)
- For the fifth consecutive
year, the GU Hellenic
Association hosted another
successful Big Fat Greek
Dinner in the ICC Galleria
on December 1. For one night,
the Georgetown University Hellenic Association brought a taste of
Greece to students and faculty.
The event featured dance
performances, Greek food which
raised nescessary funds for our organization.

Hellenext Initiative Host Forum
on "The Next Generation of
Greek-American Youth"

- The
Hellenext Initiative, a
non-profit group dedicated to
the next generation of
Greek-American youth hosted a
roundtable event at George
Washington University, featuring
Senator Paul Sarbanes and
Rep. Elect John Sarbanes, his
son, as well as George
Stephanopolos of ABC News and
former CIA Director George
Tenet. The discussion
was moderated by Mr.
Stephanopoulos and both
politicians provided their
advice to an audience of
Washington, DC Greek Students
from Georgetown, GWU and other
universities.

Farewell to Cypriot Ambassador Evriviades

(11.08.06) - The
American Hellenic Institute (AHI) recently offered a farewell luncheon for
Cypriot Ambassador Euripides L. Evriviades, who will be returning to
Cyprus to serve as the Director of the Division of European Union Affairs at the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has been a supporter of the Georgetown Hellenic
Association, visiting campus (pictured left) in 2005 to speak about Turkish
ascension into the E.U. and the role of Cyprus and Greece in its expansion.
We thank the Ambassador for his continued support, mentorship and involvement
with our organization and wish him the best.

Greek Cultural Events in Washington, DC - Society for Preservation of Greek
Heritage and AHI

(10.15.06) - As part
of our mission to offer students opportunities of cultural enrichment, the
Society for the Preservation of Greek Heritage (SPGH), a Washington, DC
nonprofit dedicated to Hellenic culture constantly offers events which are free
for students.
Also, students are welcome to participate in events sponsored by the American
Hellenic Institute, another Washington nonprofit dedicated to Hellenic

Georgetown welcomes Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis

(9.27.2006) - Students in the
Georgetown University Community
welcomed Ms. Dora Bakoyannis
to campus for a speech about the
future of U.S. - European Union
relations. During her
speech in Gaston Hall, Ms.
Bakoyannis spoke about the need
for more consistent
collaboration between the US and
European Union, reflecting on
the role of Greece in the recent
conflict in Lebanon. She
outlined the Greek policy on EU
expansion into Turkey and other
Balkan states. She emphasized
that "Greece believes that all
Balkan states should be EU
members." Hellenic Association
students had the opportunity to
meet Ms. Bakoyannis before the
speech. We especially
thank the BMW Center for
European Affairs and the Embassy
of Greece.

Students Attend Dedication of
Chancery at Greek Embassy
(9.26.2006)
- Students from the GU Hellenic
Association attended the
dedication of the new chancery
at the Embassy of Greece.
In attendance was Ms. Dora
Bakoyannis, Foreign Minister
of Greece and former Mayor of
Athens. Accompanying Ms. Bakoyannis was Ambassador
Alexandros Mallias and Senator
Paul Sarbanes. She spoke
about the importance of the
Embassy and its commitment to

Scholarship Benefit

year, several students from
the Georgetown Hellenic
Association attended the
15th Annual Hellenic Times
Scholarship Gala in New York
City at the Marriott
Marquis. This annual
event commemorates
outstanding high school
seniors in the
Greek-American community, as
well as service awards to
prominent Greek-Americans.
This year, awards were given

NY News Weatherman Nick
Gregory. Also,

Idol Contestant Constantine

Students Celebrate Pascha and
End of Semester with Lamb Roast

To celebrate Orthodox
Easter, the Georgetown
Hellenic Association hosted
an Orthodox Christian Lamb
Roast on the Leavey Center
Esplanade. With
beautiful weather, students
from the Orthodox Christian
Fellowship, Hellenic
Association and other groups
such as the Armenian Student
Association dined on a
freshly roasted lamb, other
Greek dishes and sweets.

As part of our cultural
awareness and preservation
of Hellenic Culture, the
Georgetown European Foreign
Service Association, part of
the Masters of Foreign
Service Program (MSFS),
welcomed Mrs. Fanny
Palli-Petralia, Greek
Minister of Tourism to
Campus on April 11.
Mrs. Palli-Petralia spoke
about Greece post-Athens
Olympics, her lecture
entitled
"Challenges and
Opportunities for Tourism in
Post-Olympics Greece"
Additionally, attendees
dined on a delicious Greek
lunch provided by the
Embassy. Our sincere

Greek Embassy in Washington Seeks Interns
(01.03.06) - The Embassy of Greece - Washington, DC is looking for one or two interns for a semester or year-long unpaid internship at the Embassy, which would entail working with and researching for the Ambassador. Interested students must speak Greek and an interview would be required. Inquires should be sent to evie@greekembassy.org Interns would need to be able to work 3 hours a day, 5 days per week. The preferred majors/areas of interest are: international relations, political science, journalism, public diplomacy, strategic studies and political campaigning.
My Big Fat Greek Dinner - Another Success
(12.02.05) - My Big Fat Greek Dinner , now in its fourth year, was held on Friday December 2 in the Intercultural Center. The Georgetown Hellenic Association welcomed more than 150 students, dignitaries and others to a Greek dinner and dancing performance. Guests dined on souvlaki, spanikopita and baklava and then watched Georgetown Hellenic Association members dance various folk dances including: Zorba, Pentozali and Hasapiko.

The Hellenext Initiative,
a program which seeks education, excellence and leadership amongst Greek-American youth, has sought Georgetown University students to be part of the promotional materials for this fundraising campaign. Recently, Georgetown Hellenic Students posed with notable ABC television personality George Stephanopoulos as well as former CIA Director George Tenet.
Cypriot Ambassador Visits Georgetown
(11.28.2005) - The Masters of Foreign Serivce program welcomed Cypriot Ambassador Euripides L. Evriviades to campus for a luncheon and discussion on current affairs of Cyprus and EU ascension talks with Turkey. Ambassador Evriviades offered insight into the future of the EU
and how Cyprus is adapting,
having entered recently.
Students were treated to a
Greek lunch, generously
donated by the Embassy of
Cyprus.
