What is it like to have a Jewish son/daugther at a Jesuit University?

I am sure most of you are going through the same doubts and concerns that my husband and I had when our daughter Jill was seriously considering Georgetown. A Jewish girl at a Jesuit school, how can that work? Let me say that Georgetown has been the most incredible experience for both Jill and for us. I will give you a little insight into our experience and how it has been for Jill through our eyes.

Jill actually was not going to consider Georgetown because it was a "Catholic university", but since we were in DC looking at other schools, her college counselor told us to visit nonetheless. During our tour we learned of and then were able to visit with Rabbi White. We were shocked. We had no idea there was a Rabbi on the staff. At this point we already loved the school but were skeptical as to the fit. Meeting Rabbi White changed our feelings dramatically. Jill asked many questions and we voiced our concerns. He enlightened us on the presence of the various Jewish organizations on campus, that touch all Jewish students from varying backgrounds, because of the number of Jewish students on campus. We had no idea there were that many Jewish students at the University. The fact that the JSA was not only alive on campus but active and thriving, made a difference in our outlook and impression of Georgetown University. We could see Jill's eyes light up and knew she was sold.

From orientation up to this point Jill has been committed to JSA and being Jewish at Georgetown. It is not only possible, but hard not to be. From freshman year at High Holiday services where there were over 500 in attendance to falafel night at the JSA house - the students show up. It is a wonderful experience for us as parents to visit Georgetown and attend a random Friday night service with more than 50 students in the house, the camaraderie is amazing. Understand that Jill is involved in numerous other activities on campus, but JSA is like coming home. It has been family away from home for Jill and a comfort to us as parents.

If you have doubts or concerns my husband or I would be glad to speak to you. Feel free to call us or email, we would be happy to help in any way. Don't write Georgetown off your list because of the Catholic affiliation. Look at it closely, ask questions and you will find it is a warm and beautiful experience and the openness of the Jesuit community only enhances being Jewish on campus.
