The Ranger Challenge team provides cadets with an opportunity for some exciting and challenging training. Ranger Challenge
is the “varsity sport” of ROTC. Annually, more than 300 universities nationwide field teams to compete in a series of challenging
events. The Hoya Battalion Ranger Challenge Team is named after MAJ Michael Lawrence Malone who founded a Ranger program in the
Hoya BN during the Vietnam War to better prepare Hoya cadets for the rigors of combat that they would face in the jungles of
Vietnam. MAJ Malone was killed in action January 7, 1968 in Quang Nam, South Vietnam.
The Hoya BN’s Malone Rangers train five days a week for two hours a day, in addition to FTXs every Saturday.
This training culminates with a competition at FT A.P. Hill, VA, at the end of October against 27 other teams
from the region. Training for this event includes rigorous physical fitness workouts, information classes on
and practical application of various elements of light infantry tactics.

The Maneuver Warfare Club is dedicated to the study of military history and theory including lectures, war games,
and battlefield tours. In the past, the club has sponsored lectures from historians, military officers, and combat
veterans. Our cadre oversight, Major Vandergriff, has great expertise in military history as well as many contacts
of people working with modern war theory, allowing us to have influential speakers. The club occasionally organizes
military war games at their own initiative or with Major Vandergriff. However, one of the most influential activities
of the club is touring a Civil War battlefield once a semester. Some battlefields we have toured include Gettysburg,
Cedar Creek, Antietem, and Monocacy. The lessons learned from walking the ground help us better understand the Civil
War and warfare in general. Indeed, it is an academic oriented club, without the burden of assigned reading or homework.
The Maneuver Warfare Club is a club for cadets to explore and learn about war in order to better prepare us as future 2LTs.
