DEPARTMENTAL PROGRAMSFRENCHMajor in FrenchFrench majors enjoy a number of opportunities that enable them to achieve high levels of linguistic and cultural competency that meet and often surpass those of their peers from other top-tier universities. After achieving linguistic proficiency, French majors pursue study of French and Francophone cultures and literature, as well as specialized areas of post-advanced language learning. Students should select appropriate courses in consultation with their advisors and the Director of Undergraduate Studies, particularly with reference to their overall academic and career goals. Note: French majors who complete the Business Coursework Program, the Pre-Medical Program, or a second major are exempt from the second language requirement. Overseas StudiesFrench majors are normally required to study in a French or Francophone university during their undergraduate years in the context of a one-semester, full-academic year, or intensive summer program. Georgetown offers excellent programs at the Universities of Lyon, Nantes, Strasbourg, the Institut dEtudes Politiques in Paris (and its regional affiliates throughout France), the Universities of Paris (Sweet Briar and CUPA Programs), and at universities in Belgium, French Canada and Francophone Africa--all of which require direct matriculation and must meet the overseas studies standards and guidelines established by the Office of International Programs. The French Department also sponsors a six-week summer study program in Tours, France and a six-week summer politics and business program in Paris. See the Overseas Study section of this Bulletin. Joseph McCarthy ScholarshipsThese scholarships, based on merit and need, have been established to support overseas study for students participating in Georgetown Universitys Summer Programs in Tours and Paris, France, and for French majors studying for a semester or a year in France or a Francophone country. Up to four grants of up to $2,500 each are available for the summer program in Tours; one grant of up to $2,500 is available for the summer program in Paris; and up to four grants of up to $2,500 per semester are available for a semester or a full-year abroad. Application forms and complete information are available on the web at http://french.georgetown.edu. Minor in FrenchStudents majoring in other subjects are welcome to minor in French. French minors achieve proficiency in the French language and then further develop their understanding of the French and Francophone world. By complementing their primary fields of study with a French minor, students will bolster their linguistic, cultural, and literary knowledge and further their exploration of the humanities. Students enhanced exposure to French and Francophone cultures comes coupled with more refined writing, research, and critical thinking abilities.
