Undergraduate Bulletin 2007-2008 Table of Contents THE FACULTY OF LANGUAGES AND LINGUISTICSGERMANThe German Department offers coursework in language, linguistics, literature, and culture. Required courses for German majors are listed below. Entering students take a placement test upon arrival to determine where to begin the program.

German majors are strongly encouraged to take a second language. German Minor Students majoring in other subjects are welcome to minor in German. Six semester courses taught in German and above 011 or 002 are required.

Scholarship Support The German Orphan Home Foundation has donated funds to the German Department to be disbursed as fellowship aid, on the basis of merit and need. Eligible are German majors as well as other students. Application forms and more detailed information are available from the German Department.
Cultural Opportunities Students are urged to participate in numerous cultural opportunities offered by the Department and the Washington area. For details contact the German Department or by subscribing to the internal list serv at GERMAN-L@listproc.georgetown.edu.
Overseas Study The Department requires students to have a significant overseas study experience. Students interested in the University's five-week summer study program at the University of Trier, Federal Republic of Germany, should contact the Department or the Office of International Programs. The University also conducts semester and full-year programs at the universities of Berlin, Munich, Tübingen and Vienna. In addition, students can, in consultation with their advisors, arrange independent study programs in various German-speaking countries. (See section on this topic in the Bulletin.)
