THE FACULTY OF LANGUAGES AND LINGUISTICS

VI. DEPARTMENTAL PROGRAMS

SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE

SPANISH

Major in Spanish

The Spanish major consists of a minimum of eleven semester courses above the level of Intensive Intermediate Spanish. A minimum of seven of the eleven courses required for the major must be taken on campus in the Department. Spanish majors must take at least one course a semester in the major, regardless of the number of courses they have already taken. At least seven of the courses must be upper division courses, numbered above 201. At least one course must be at the 300-level or above and at least one must be at the 400-level or above. These courses may be chosen among the Department offerings in Hispanic literature, Hispanic culture and civilization, and/or Spanish linguistics. Some majors may have to take up to fourteen courses to complete the requirements.

Related area courses available through other departments, including the Latin American Area Studies Program, may interest some majors. A certificate in Latin American Studies is available and may be arranged with the advisor and director of the Center for Latin American Studies.

Required Courses

12 General Education courses

11 Spanish courses (minimum, unless placement requires additional language study) consisting of:

  • 2 semesters Intensive Advanced Spanish. Note: Students who declare a major in Spanish after completing SPAN-103 and SPAN-104 rather than Intensive Advanced I and II are required to take an additional course at the 400-level in order to complete the major.
  • 2 semesters of a literature survey from among the following courses: Survey of Spanish Literature (SPAN-241, SPAN-242), Survey of Spanish American Literature (SPAN-261, SPAN-262). Any two of these courses can be taken, and they may be taken in any order. These courses can be used to fulfill the area requirements described below. For example, Survey of Spanish Literature I fulfills both the Peninsular and the Pre-1700 requirements.
  • 1 semester Introduction to Hispanic Linguistics (SPAN-210). (This course satisfies one semester of the two-semester college General Education requirement in Social Science).
  • 1 semester Spanish linguistics course to be chosen from among the following: Spanish Structure (SPAN-212 or 412); Teaching Spanish (SPAN-392); Spanish Sociolinguistics (SPAN-396); Spanish Dialectology (SPAN-426); or History of the Spanish Language (SPAN-427). (These courses satisfy one semester of the two-semester college General Education requirement).
  • 5 semesters upper-level Spanish electives (200–499)at the level of 200 or above, including at least one course at the 300-level or above and one course at the 400-level or above. Of these courses, one must be in peninsular literature and one in Latin American literature, and one must be in pre-1700 and one in post-1700. (Note that one course can meet two requirements. For example, Don Quijote meets both the Peninsular and pre-1700 requirements.) Alternatively, students can take upper-level linguistics courses (200 or above) instead of any of these literature or culture courses.

Students may count one 201–400 level course taught in the Spanish department in a language other than Spanish (e.g., Portuguese, Catalan, Basque) towards the major. If the course is taught in English or cross-listed with another department, Spanish majors are required to do all written work in Spanish.

Spanish Major with Business Coursework

(See the Business Coursework section of this Bulletin.)

Overseas Studies (majors)

Spanish majors are required to study in Spain or Spanish America for a semester or, preferably, for an academic year. Although Advanced Spanish II is the minimum required course, it is highly recommended that students complete a more advanced course before enrolling in a study-abroad program. No credit is given to majors or minors for Spanish language courses taken abroad in Spanish-speaking countries. Students must get the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies for their courses before going overseas. Summer courses taken abroad do not meet the study-abroad requirement unless they are taken in a Georgetown program (Quito or Barcelona).

Overseas Studies (non-majors and minors)

Non-majors or minors may receive credit for Spanish-language courses taken in Spanish-speaking countries only if they pass a validation test offered by the Department upon their return.

Spanish and Portuguese Programs Abroad

With the permission of the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Spanish majors may substitute summer study in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese programs in Quito, Ecuador or Barcelona, Spain for a semester abroad. Participants in these programs take two or three 3-credit courses, including courses regularly offered in the Department and courses particular to the locale. With regard to transcripts and GPA, these are not considered transfer courses but rather regular Georgetown courses. All courses are offered in Spanish, and students sign a language pledge.

Outside of the Department programs in Quito and Barcelona, no summer program meets the study-abroad requirement for majors. However, with the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies, elective courses taken abroad in non-Department programs can count toward the major.

Other Study Abroad Programs

Students participating in overseas studies may take courses in Hispanic Art, Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy, and other appropriate related areas. These courses can be used to fulfill 200-level Spanish requirements, provided they are taught in Spanish and deal with Spain or Spanish America. A maximum of two courses per semester taken abroad can be counted toward the major. One of these can be a program course reserved for foreign students in general or American students in particular. (Students going to the Dominican Republic may take two such courses.) Upon returning, students will show their syllabi of courses taken abroad to the Director of Undergraduate Studies in order to receive credit.

Students who double major in two languages may choose to split their year abroad. That is, they may study one semester in a Spanish-speaking country and one semester in a country where the other major language is spoken. In this case, they can receive credit for a maximum of one course taken in the non-Spanish-speaking country, with the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Double-majors who spend only one semester abroad will not receive credit for courses taken in a non-Spanish-speaking country.

Transfer/AP Credit

A maximum of four courses taken at other institutions can be transferred toward the major. Transfer students must have the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies in order to get credit for courses taken at another institution.

Students can receive AP credit for up to two courses. Students who have received AP credit equivalent of Intensive Advanced I and II can therefore receive credit for a maximum of two courses taken abroad or at other American universities. These courses can be used to fulfill 200-level requirements.

Students can apply a maximum of two summer courses taken at other institutions in the United States or abroad toward the major, except for the Department courses offered in Quito and Barcelona. These courses can be used to fulfill 200-level requirements.

Honors Program

Outstanding majors will be invited to participate in the Department Honors Program. The Honors Program offers students the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor, to pursue original scholarly research, and to produce a thesis. Students who complete the program will receive “Honors” in their official transcripts. Students who write truly exceptional theses will be awarded “Distinction” in addition to “Honors.” The Department of Spanish and Portuguese also awards a prize annually for the best thesis. Please see the link: http://www12.georgetown.edu/undergrad/bulletin/collegefll7.html#senior.

Applications are available in the Spanish Department. (See the section on this topic in the Bulletin.)

Minor in Spanish

The Spanish Department welcomes students from other majors who wish to complete a Spanish minor. The minor consists of a minimum of six courses. Students who begin their minor at a level higher than Intensive Advanced Spanish will nevertheless have to take six courses to complete the requirements unless they receive transfer or AP credit. At least four courses must be taken on the Georgetown campus or in the Georgetown University programs in Quito, Ecuador or Barcelona, Spain.

For students majoring in a modern language or linguistics:

  • SPAN-111 and 112 Intensive Advanced Spanish I and II
  • 4 courses at the 200-level or above in literature, culture or linguistics, one of which must be numbered 300 or above

  • 4 courses 200-level or above in literature, culture or linguistics, one of which must be numbered 300 or above. Courses taken abroad can be used to fulfill 200-level Spanish requirements, provided they are taught in Spanish and deal with Spain or Spanish America.

Overseas Study (Minors)

Spanish minors are encouraged to study abroad. Although Advanced Spanish II is the minimum required course, it is highly recommended that students complete a Gateway course before enrolling in a study-abroad program. Students must get the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies for their courses before going overseas. With the permission of the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Spanish minors may count summer courses in Georgetown University’s programs in Quito, Ecuador or Barcelona, Spain toward the minor. Participants in these programs take two or three 3-credit courses, which consist of courses regularly offered in the Department and courses particular to the locale. With regard to transcripts and GPA, these are not considered transfer courses but rather regular Georgetown courses. All courses are offered in Spanish, and students sign a language pledge.

Students participating in overseas studies may take courses in Hispanic Art, Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy, and other appropriate related areas. These courses can be used to fulfill 200-level Spanish requirements, provided the courses are taught in Spanish and deal with Spain or Spanish America. A maximum of one course per semester taken abroad can be counted toward the minor. One of these can be a program course reserved for foreign students in general or American students in particular. Upon returning, students will show the syllabi of courses taken abroad to the Director of Undergraduate Studies in order to receive credit. No credit will be given toward the minor for courses taken in non-Spanish-speaking countries. Minors must take at least four courses on the Georgetown campus or in the Georgetown University programs in Quito, Ecuador or Barcelona, Spain.

Transfer/AP Credit

A maximum of one course taken at another institution can be transferred toward the minor. A summer course taken at another institution can fulfill a 200-level requirement for the minor. Transfer students must have the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies in order to get credit for a course taken at another institution. Minors must take at least four courses on the Georgetown campus or in the Georgetown University programs in Quito, Ecuador or Barcelona, Spain.

Students can receive AP credit for up to two courses (the equivalent of Intensive Advanced I and II) toward the minor.
