THE FACULTY OF LANGUAGES AND LINGUISTICS

SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE

SPANISH

The Spanish major consists of eleven semester courses above the level of Intensive Intermediate Spanish. Therefore, students who place into Intensive Basic or Intensive Intermediate must take a total of thirteen or twelve semesters of Spanish respectively to graduate. At least seven of the ten courses must be upper division courses, numbered above 230, at least one numbered 400 or above in Hispanic literature, Hispanic culture and civilization, and/or Spanish Linguistics.

Related area courses available through other departments, including the Latin American Area Studies Program, may interest some majors. A certificate in Latin American Area Studies is available and may be arranged with the advisor and director of the Center for Latin American Studies. For students who have a strong high school background in European History, Latin American History is acceptable in fulfillment of the History requirement rather than European Civilization, with permission of the advisor, the History Department, and the Dean.

Required Courses

As of Fall 2004, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese has reconfigured its major. The new requirements will apply to students entering in Fall 2004 and beyond.

Overseas Studies

Spanish majors are required to study in Spain or Spanish America for a semester or, preferably, for an academic year. With the permission of the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Spanish majors may substitute summer study in Georgetown University's program in Quito, Ecuador for a semester abroad. Students participating in overseas study may take courses in Hispanic Art, Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy, and other appropriate related areas. These courses can be used to fulfill upper division Spanish requirements, provided the courses are taught in Spanish and deal with Spain or Spanish America. A maximum of four courses, with a total of two per semester, taken overseas may be counted toward the major and one for the minor. Students should consult their advisors to develop a well-balanced program. (See section on this topic in the Bulletin.)
