Experience Life in Our Nation's Capital
Georgetown University’s Semester in Washington, D.C. program (SWP) provides students with a unique opportunity to develop their professional skills and broaden their academic experience in the heart of the nation’s capital. This innovative program, offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters, offers a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience, where students will learn from key policymakers and elected officials, gain valuable internship experience, and explore the vibrant political and cultural landscape of D.C.
Students will spend part of their time in a classroom setting, where they will hear guest lectures from international experts and business leaders, engage in stimulating group discussions, and explore current events. Throughout the course of the semester, students will also complete a guided independent research project, working closely with a Georgetown Research Advisor as they explore a topic of interest and apply the concepts they have learned.
In addition to academic and research pursuits, students will spend several days per week at an internship of their choice, gaining valuable real-world experience from industry leaders at top organizations. Georgetown offers students a wide range of internship opportunities, including federal agencies, law firms, news organizations, nonprofits, public relations agencies, and many other reputable connections unique to Washington, D.C.
At the beginning of the semester, students will choose one of six subject areas as a concentration for their internship and research study:
Digital Communications, New Media, and Social Change
Students will explore the array of strategic challenges involved with using technology and the Internet in government, social movements, and society in today’s changing world.
International Commerce and Trade
Through engaging group discussions, presentations, and meetings with D.C. business leaders, students will gain valuable insights into current opportunities and challenges facing the world’s marketplace.
Students will gain a broader global perspective as they analyze and discuss world affairs with international experts and leaders from both the public and private sectors.
Law, Legislation, and Politics
Working hand-in-hand with leaders in the legal field, students will enhance their understanding of legal issues and the legal profession in the city where legislation is crafted, debated, and enforced by some of the greatest minds in the land.
Politics and Public Policy
Through class discussions and meetings with key legislative staff, and elected officials, students will experience democracy in action in the nation’s capital while gaining an insider’s understanding of the complex elements shaping today’s political landscape.
Religion and Political Culture
Guided by the brightest minds in religious and political theory students will explore religion’s influence on policy making through seminars, group discussions, and unique opportunities to engage with some of D.C.’s leading lobbyists and key policy experts.
